C.L. HECKART DIES AT FAMILY HOME
Was One of City's Best Known Contractors; Lived in Corvallis 40 Years
Charles Lewis Heckart, for many years one of Corvallis' best known
contractors and builders and a resident of the city more than 40 years,
died at 7:30 last night at the family home, 2042 Monroe street. Although
he had been in ill health for several years, Mr. Heckart's death came
rather suddenly and as a surprise to his family and friends.
Mr. Heckart was born in Wapello county, Iowa, July 18, 1870. He lived
in the vicinity of his birthplace for 17 years and then, following the
death of his mother, went to make his home with a brother in Nebraska.
After two years in that state Mr. Heckart came to Oregon and located in
Corvallis in 1889. He was the son of Michael and Mary Heckart.
Until his health failed Mr. Heckart was one of the most prominent
contractors in Corvallis. He superintended construction on the
Christian and Madison Street Methodist churches, the administration
building of Albany college, the McMinnville and Eugene Baptist churches,
Shepard hall on the Oregon State college campus, Philomath high school,
the J. R. Smith building, the Whiteside garage and numerous other
structures in Corvallis and this section of the valley.
Mr. Heckart was for many years an active member of the Evangelical
church and was influential in the erection of the present church building.
He served as trustee and held other offices in the local denomination.
He was a member of Corvallis Camp No 6029 Modern Woodmen of America.
Mr. Heckart was active in organizing the Y.M.C.A. on the college campus
and was an ardent supported of the present city park, one of his hobbies
to which he gave various donations. Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Zelia Heckart, and two sons, Earl and Vern M. Heckart.
The funeral service will be from the Evangelical church Monday afternoon
at 2 o'clock. Dr. C. C.
